Frequently Asked Questions

Basics Q: What are the rough opening dimensions for a metal frame? A: The rough opening dimensions for a standard Hollow metal & Timely frame are as follows:

  • Hollow Metal

  • Assumes std. 2" face, butted wall.
  • "A" = opening width + 4 1/2"
  • "B" = opening height + 2 1/4"
  • So for a 3070 door & frame, the rough opening would be 40 1/2" x 86 1/4"
  • For a wrap-around drywall frame:
  • "A" = opening width + 2 1/4"
  • A 3070 door & frame would have a rough opening of 38 1/4" x 85"
  • Please note: At fire rated installations, drywall must extend at least 1/2" into frame.
Frame Rough Opening
  • Timely

  • "A" = opening width + 1 1/4"
  • "B" = opening height + 1"
  • A 3070 door & frame would have a rough opening of 37 1/4" x 85"
  • For a sidelite frame:
  • "A" = opening width + sidelite + 2" for each mullion + 1 1/4"
  • "B" = opening height + 1"
  • A 3070 door & frame with a 12" sidelite would have a rough opening of 51 1/4" x 85"
Q: I'm confused. Sometimes fire ratings are listed as hourly, other times as letters. What is the relationship between the two, and in what type of wall is each traditionally used? A: Assemblies bearing specific time intervals perform satisfactorily under a fire test at the stated time interval in accordance with the requirements of the test. The alphabetical letter designation is one method employed to classify the opening for which the fire door is considered suitable. Following is the relationship between the hourly and letter designation and their use:
  • Class "A" (3 hour)

  • Openings in fire walls that divide a single building into fire areas.
  • Class "B" (1 1/2 hour)

  • Openings in enclosures of vertical shafts and stairwells through buildings and in 2 hour rated partitions providing horizontal fire separations.
  • Class "C" (3/4 hour)

  • Openings in walls or partitions between rooms and corridors having a fire resistance rating of 1 hour or less.
  • Class "D" (1 1/2 hour)

  • Openings in exterior walls subject to severe fire exposure from outside the building.
  • Class "E" (3/4 hour)

  • Openings in exterior walls subject to moderate or light fire exposure from the outside of the building.
  • No letter designation (1/2 or 1/3 hour)

  • Openings in walls or partitions between rooms and corridors having a fire resistance rating of 1 hour or less.
  • Please Note: These doors are NOT considered fire doors, but rather used for smoke control only.
Q: What is the largest size of visible glass that can be put into a fire rated door? A: The required hourly rating will dictate the approved glass lites available. All glass used in fire rated doors must be listed glass, and be either 1/4" wire or other listed material. Basic guidelines on glass are as follows:
  • 20 minute

  • 1296 sq. in. per lite with neither dimension exceeding 54"
  • 3/4 hour

  • 1296 sq. in. per lite with neither dimension exceeding 54"
  • 1 1/2 hour

  • 100 sq. in. per door leaf max.
  • 3 hour

  • flush door, no glass
Q: How do I hand a door? A: Door Handing is recommended from the "keyed" side - normally "outside" the room, closer to egress.

NSF is no longer the law

2003-09-13 10:47:47 by 1gus

NSF is a standard, but not the law anymore. I fyou can prove that it is washable, and commercial grade, you can use it. It does have to be on wheels, or 6 inches off the ground on round metal legs. There is no law against glass door refrigerators (who told you that?) for food. Oviously, markets would have a tough time selling their frozen products through solid doors.
