You, sir, are a nut. But your trick can help.
1.390 mhz is *not good for passing through buildings. the waves are 2.5 feet long, and won't pass through metal openings of that size or smaller; most modern commercial buildings have metal studs on 18 to 24 inch centers, not 30 inches. Metal house siding, and garage doors are also great shields.
2.your tin-foil solution simply makes the antenna on the opener directional. you will have better success if you place a 30-inch square of foil behind the opener relative to where you want to use the opener from.
